Brussels Girl Geek Dinner

About

Girl Geek Dinners are events for females who class themselves as girly and geeky. The events have a technical focus and are light hearted and fun.
This blog was created by Clo Willaerts to set up a Brussels Girl Geek Dinner.
Idea inspired by Sarah Blow of London Girl Geek Dinners. WP Design by Ine Dehandschutter. Adapted Girl Geek Dinners logo by Carolien. Original logo by Cole Henley.

BGGD #12: Qu’est-ce que c’est, une Girl Geek? [UPDATE]

Posted in Girl Geek Dinners,Press by Clo Willaerts on the March 28th, 2009

Interesting (and funny) analysis of what a Girl Geek really is by Corinne Boulangier (RTBF, La Première) and Sylvestre Defontaine (Pure FM. In French.

La Premiere

Culture Club chronique 27/3/2009-Sylvestre DefontaineCorinne BOULANGIER

Update: Make sure to read the comments (including an answer from Sylvestre Defontaine) over at Kreatuur: Les geekettes sont-elles humaines? Réponse à Sylvestre Defontaine.

AdaLovelaceDay09 Pattie Maes: invent bandwagons rather than jump on them

Posted in Activism by Clo Willaerts on the March 24th, 2009

On January 6th I signed the Ada Lovelace Day pledge:

I will publish a blog post on Tuesday 24th March about a woman in technology whom I admire but only if 1,000 other people will do the same.

The goal has been reached: so far 1.508 people signed the pledge.
I found the woman in technology I admire through Elise Huard: When I grow up, I want to be like Pattie Maes.
Belgian scientist Pattie Maes, currently an associate professor in MIT‘s Program in Media Arts and Sciences, was one of the speakers at this year’s TED conference and an expert in human-computer interaction, intelligent interfaces and ubiquitous computing.
One of her projects is Siftables, which “aims to enable people to interact with information and media in a physical, natural manner that approaches interactions with physical objects in our everyday lives.” But at TED, she demoed sixthsense, “a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.”
This quote from Pattie Maes explains what really drives her:

“We like to invent new disciplines or look at new problems, and invent bandwagons rather than jump on them.”

BGGD #12: What the bloggers say

Posted in Blogs,Girl Geek Dinners by Clo Willaerts on the March 16th, 2009

It’s pink, it had glitters, it was geeky…

Thanks for BGGD Shopping in London @ Het leven zoals het is: “Well done, all of you, and again: thanks! ”

When the pound is low, it’s hard to say no @ Sara Van de Velde: “Many, many thx to everyone who made this wonderful day remarkable!”

Defintely Geeky, None the Less Girly!

Girl Geeks are shopping in London thanks to Eurostar @ Rolling Talks: “When working includes so much fun, its just very hard to say no” ;-)”

Girl Geek Jam @ Selfish Programming: “what makes the events stand out most is the diversity of the crowd they attract. The creative variety that goes into each event is a reflection of the effectiveness of the organic networks that Girl Geek Dinners strive to seed and grow.”

BGGD #12 in De Standaard: “De ideale proefkonijnen”

Posted in Girl Geek Dinners,Press by Clo Willaerts on the March 16th, 2009

The girl geeks mentioned in the press article are @bnox  @imkedielen @lamazone @matuvu and @sasvangent . The mobile application talked about can be found at http://www.eurostar.com/girlsgeeks.
And for the record: we don’t consider ourselves feminists :-)
