Greenlight for Girls (@green4girls) is an NGO with a mission to encourage girls of all ages to pursue a future in math, science, engineering and technology.

For their upcoming event on November 20th in Brussels, Greenlight for Girls will be bringing together 300 young girls, including my 11 year old daughter Mayke, to learn from role models and mentors.

This free event, targeted at 11-15 year-old Dutch-, French- and English-speaking girls in Belgium, aims to encourage young women to take up careers in science (math, engineering, technology, etc.), by emphasizing the link between science and fun careers, especially those with a creative “bent.”

The event is designed to progress in workshop form, with each workshop leader conducting a workshop for three groups of ten girls. There will also be a “fun-lab” with activities/entertainment for the girls, including a project display space for event sponsors; and lunch will be served.

You heard the word: sponsors.

For BGGD #26 on Wed 21 April about Girls vs Video Games we’re still looking for a way to feed the girls. Got a creative sandwich/cake/tapas idea or know somebody with a stock of soda or alcoholic drinks? Drop a line in the comments.

University of Ghent student Constantijn Seys is investigating the motivations for consumers to buy a 3G enabled handheld device.
For a group session on 3G on Thursday 29 October 19:45 in Ghent he is still looking for female users of 3G enabled non-iPhone devices, preferably for personal use. More specifically, he’s looking for one 25-40 and one 40-60 year old 3G user.

On to the 3rd year of Brussels Girl Geek Dinners! [UPDATE]

Brussels Girl Geek Dinner started in August 2007 . We’ve had 13 editions so far and have been growing ever since. The last few editions attract over 100 girl geeks easily and the attendee lists are always full within hours after announcing. But the main thing is that thanks to a lot of help from friends and sponsors, Brussels Girl Geek Dinners are still a free and open event, light hearted and fun.

I apologise for not communicating earlier about the upcoming editions of Brussels Girl Geek Dinner. But I have a number of excuses:

May 2009 was one of the busiest months in my career (shameless plug: www.targetwomen.be ) – hence, no time to prepare a June edition
I’m barely in the country in July so no BGGD in July, either

In the meanwhile I’m talking to a number of current and future Girl Geek Dinner sponsors and this is what it looks like so far:

BGGD3: full house – but trying to get the Facebook ladies in

A week or so ago I realised there was not enough space to accomodate everyone who wanted to be at the third Brussels Girl Geek Dinner. To make matters even more dramatic, thirty-something people answered “yes” to the Facebook invite, but didn’t add their name to the official Registration Wiki page.

So over the last few days I did a couple of things to try and fix it:

I decided not to count the boys – accompanying “talking handbags” will get food and drinks but no goodie bag. This freed up about ten places.
I moved the reserves list to the subscribers list because in theory they are the first in line to get on the list.

And now we’re up to the maximum of 40 subscribers again, while there are still 15 “Facebook ladies” who’d like to join.

So here’s my question: have a good look at the Attendants List over at the wiki. If you’re listed as “Attending” but you’re not able to make it to Ghent on Wednesday 13 February, please remove your name or move it to the Off list a bit lower on the page. If you’re having trouble don’t hesitate to mail me at clo bnox.be

BGGD #3: wiki is up

As you probably know, entrance to Girl Geek Dinners is free and there is usually free food and drinks BUT only for people who registered. So I’ve just put up a wiki page to have all attendees subscribe:

The password to edit the page (and to add your name to the list of attendees) is tux .

The idea is to have as many robots under one roof and all these wifi gizmos will need lots of wireless connectivity. So we’re looking for a location (Ghent is fine) where we can easily accomodate 40 girl geeks and some 20 robots.

We need a beamer

As you know our speaker for Girl Geek Dinner #2 is Sensoa‘s Sandra Van den Eynde, who will speak about the combination sex+internet.

She will bring some powerpoint slides with her, and all we need now is a beamer and maybe also a portable screen. If you can bring one on 13 November, let us know in the comments.

PS I’ve just been told that beamer is an example of an example of pseudo-anglicism in a number of languages including German and Dutch. What we really mean is a portable video projector.
