Brussels Girl Geek Dinner

About

Girl Geek Dinners are events for females who class themselves as girly and geeky. The events have a technical focus and are light hearted and fun.
This blog was created by Clo Willaerts to set up a Brussels Girl Geek Dinner.
Idea inspired by Sarah Blow of London Girl Geek Dinners. WP Design by Ine Dehandschutter. Adapted Girl Geek Dinners logo by Carolien. Original logo by Cole Henley.

The ultimate girl geek dream machine

Posted in Girl Geeks by Clo Willaerts on the February 28th, 2008

What would a girl geek laptop look like? Well what I saw today at Popgadget – Personal Technology for Women comes pretty close: Sony’s Vaio Graphic Splash, a collection of limited edition notebooks. I especially like the customizing part: “When you choose a customizable VAIO Graphic Splash notebook, you decide what goes in the computer as well as what goes on it. Select the hard drive, processor and memory that’s right for you, and enclose it all in a bold and sophisticated shell.” In three colours, three patterns and four keyboard fonts.

Which made me think… what would the perfect Girl Geek Dinner laptop look like? Which tech specs and which “look”? Maybe we could pull some strings to actually go and get one for a very very lucky girl geek…

What do you think?

I’ll settle for a big-people laptop, thanks. Any specially girlified technology that’s more advanced than an armpit razor is suspect, because the design philosophy is made of absolute contempt for the user. It goes something like this: “We’re selling a complex, expensive device with an actual function, and the buyer is going to choose it because of the pink glitter we slap on the case. Odds are she has 1) no clue what she’s doing and 2) no interest in finding out because machiney things are for boys, tee hee. Also we blew our whole engineering budget on having [insert Parisian couture diva here] design the logo.”

So to me those graphic splashes pretty much scream “Mattel Inside” until I see some proof otherwise. And even then I wouldn’t buy one: better to find a comparable ugly machine and spend the savings on upgrades. Is that not what being a girl geek is about? The girl part takes no effort, it’s the geek part that we have to fight for.

It would be fun if one of these would be in the goodiebags :)

I prefer my laptops grey or black and with as much power (hard drive, memory, processor) as possible, thank you very much.

Nevertheless I would be glad getting one!
Or should I customize my own laptop? This could be an idea for a producer of fashonable stickers!
